Construction Management

Description

FEDINC provided engineering design, permitting, and construction coordination services to Clear Springs Land Company, LLC for renovation and conversion of an existing orange juice processing facility for receiving, packaging, cold storage, and shipping of fresh blueberries. The converted plant began operation in March 2007, which coincided with the 2007 blueberry season. Due to the limited time for construction and the fixed deadline for operational requirements, the project involved significant critical path scheduling in the disciplines of concrete foundations, structural steel modifications and additions, distribution of electrical power, construction of controlled atmosphere and insulated chambers, and refrigeration systems. Permitting included building permits from the Polk County Building Department and an Environmental Resource Permit (ERP) from the Southwest Florida Water Management District (SWFWMD).

A complete set of design drawings was developed for proposed modifications. Design features included modification of existing foundations and design of new concrete foundations. Structural steel design and details were developed for modification of existing structures and addition of new structures. Necessary electrical grounding, distribution, and supply services were performed.

Description

FEDINC was contracted by Progress Energy in January 2004, to provide full-service engineering for a Cooling Pond Spray System at their Hines Energy Complex. The work included construction management, as-built surveys, as-built drawings, system design, equipment review, bid specificatons, procurement, cost estimating, and certification of completion.

Design included engineering and specification of spray aeration equipment and supporting integral electrical systems (control panels, submersible electrical leads, etc., integral with mechanical equipment) for installation by the owner in the existing HEC N-16 Cooling Pond for control of thermal loads. The design accommodated complete installation of electrical systems and phased installation of spray aeration equipment as additional cooling capacity became necessary. Mechanical and integral electrical equipment selection was based on the best evaluated combination of low cost, high capacity, cooling efficiency, ease of installation, ease of operations and mainteannce, operating reliability, warranty, and lower power comsumption. All electrical systems met all applicable IEE, NEMA, and NEC codes.

FEDINC provided detailed engineering design plans and specifications suitable for procurement and construction which included multi-disciplined coordination of Civil, Structural, Mechanical, and Electrical engineering. FEDINC provided supervision, coordination and administration of technical specialty engineering and contractor teams dedicated to specific assignments. Construction management included conceptual project meetings with client, preparation and development of conceptual drawings, preliminary engineering and cost estimating, construction drawing packages, specifications, bidding documents, and provision of certified quality assurance (CQA) and final certification of construction. FEDINC also specified and recommended spray system, mechanical and integral electrical systems, spare parts inventory, and provided spare parts lists.
